A Conversation with George Norcross
August 9th, 2019

CIANJ President Anthony Russo interviewed George Norcross III at a special program earlier this week that gave CIANJ members an opportunity to hear first-hand from one of New Jersey’s leading business executives.

During the hour-long conversation, Mr. Norcross told the audience how he started Conner Strong & Buckelew, a highly successful insurance, risk management and employee benefits brokerage firm. He explained part of its name is a nod to his mother and wife’s family names, Conner and Strong, respectively. Mr. Norcross also attributed much of his success to his father, George Norcross Jr., who allowed him at a young age to sit in on meetings with key labor officials and politicians.

Mr. Norcross said growing up, he and his three brothers were close with state Senate President Stephen Sweeney and his brothers. Norcross and Sweeney remain friends today.

Business executives in the audience listened intently to Mr. Norcross. He urged them to become more active and meet with local and state elected officials to express their needs. He is concerned about New Jersey’s business climate and its competitive edge. To illustrate his point, Norcross said from his office in Camden, he can see across the river to Pennsylvania, where taxes are lower. He called upon the business leaders to ban together and let their voices be heard.
