Member News — Lowenstein Sandler Partner Paul B. Matey Confirmed to U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit
March 14th, 2019
Lowenstein Sandler is delighted to congratulate our partner Paul B. Matey upon his confirmation by the U.S. Senate to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr. Matey has been a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department.
Matey brought significant prosecutorial and government experience to Lowenstein when he joined the firm in 2018. In addition to more than four years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, he had served as a top legal advisor to former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey.
“Though Paul’s tenure at the firm was brief, he brought a wealth of experience and knowledge related to health care and the government that will have a lasting impact on our firm,” said Gary M. Wingens, Chairman and Managing Partner of Lowenstein. “Paul’s background makes him a great choice to join the Third Circuit, and his appointment to the federal bench dovetails nicely with our firm’s long-held commitment to public service.”
Matey was another example of Lowenstein Sandler’s success in attracting prominent, accomplished former prosecutors and trial lawyers to the firm’s national White Collar group. Other top-tier additions over the past 18 months have included partner Christopher Porrino (former Attorney General of New Jersey; former Director, Division of Law, New Jersey State Attorney General’s Office; former Chief Counsel to Governor Chris Christie); partner Ryan M. Wilson (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Eastern District of New York; member of former President Obama’s Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Task Force); partner Peter Slocum (former Deputy Attorney General of New Jersey; First Assistant Attorney General of New Jersey; former Counsel to the Attorney General of New Jersey; former Assistant Counsel to Governor Chris Christie); special counsel Elie Honig (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York; former Director, Department of Law and Public Safety, New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice); special counsel Anne M. Milgram (former Attorney General of New Jersey); counsel Kathleen A. McGee (former Bureau Chief of the Bureau of Internet and Technology, New York State Attorney General’s Office); and associate Shontae D. Gray (former Deputy Attorney General of New Jersey).
Partner Scott B. McBride (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey; former Deputy Chief, Economic Crimes Unit; former member, Health Care & Government Fraud Unit) joined the firm in 2016, and partner Matthew Boxer (former New Jersey State Comptroller; former Director, New Jersey’s Authorities Unit; and former federal prosecutor, Terrorism Unit, Criminal Division, and Special Prosecutions Division, U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of New Jersey) joined in 2014.
“Paul is a fantastic lawyer and will make an even better judge,” said Christopher Porrino, partner and Chair of Lowenstein’s Litigation Department, who worked closely with Matey while serving as Attorney General of New Jersey and as Chief Counsel to the Governor. “We wish him all the best and cannot wait to see the great contributions he makes to the Third Circuit and to the federal judiciary in general.”
Matey received his J.D., summa cum laude, from the Seton Hall University School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Scranton.
