Member News — Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center Recognized in Top Five and 10 Percent of Hospitals Nationwide in Multiple Specialties

Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center rank in the top five and top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation in a wide variety of specialties and services, according to a report released today by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.
Healthgrades’ 2019 Report to the Nation, released today, which evaluates nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide in 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions, shows that both Atlantic Health System hospitals continue to lead in their respective specialties of cardiac and neuroscience services.
“Our medical and clinical teams continue to raise the bar for patient safety, clinical excellence, and positive patient outcomes each day and night, ensuring our patients receive exceptional, coordinated care from a multi-specialist team at each of our campuses,” said Jan Schwarz-Miller, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer for Atlantic Health System.
Morristown Medical Center has been named one of the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for overall cardiac services, cardiac surgery, and cardiology services, overall orthopedic services, joint replacement, overall GI services, GI medical treatment, and top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for critical care.
Overlook Medical Center was named in the top five percent of hospitals in the nation in neurosciences, cranial neurosurgery, treatment of stroke, general surgery, critical care and bariatric surgery, and the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for overall GI surgery.
Both hospitals were recognized by Healthgrades with five stars–the highest rating, which shows that a hospital’s actual performance is statistically significantly better than expected–-in their hallmark specialties.
At Morristown, this included cardiac services such as coronary bypass, valve surgery, coronary intervention and treatment for heart attack and heart failure, and orthopedic services such as total knee and total hip replacements, hip fracture and spinal fusion.
Five-star honors highlighted Overlook’s neuroscience services, such as cranial neurosurgery and stroke, and its gastrointestinal services, including surgeries for esophageal/stomach, small intestine, colorectal, gall bladder removal as well as treatment of bowel obstruction.
Both hospitals received five stars for Overall Bariatric surgery.

Among other recognitions, Overlook Medical Center was named one of:
- America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care for Six Years in a Row (2014-2019)
- America’s 100 Best Hospitals for General Surgery for Three Years in a Row (2017-2019)
- America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for Four years in a Row (2016-2019)
Atlantic Health System’s Newton Medical Center was recognized among the top 10 percent in the nation for treatment of stroke, as well as received five-star ratings for treatment of the following conditions – heart failure, respiratory failure and sepsis.
