Member News — Matrix New World Engineering Geologist to Speak at Annual Conference

A premier event in the Southwest for hydrology and water resources science, engineering, and public policy, the Arizona Hydrological Society Symposium is an annual event in the southwest, focusing on hydrology and water resources science, engineering, and public policy. This year’s event, “The Importance of Hydrology in a Vibrant Southwest,” will take place on September 19-21 at the Desert Willow Conference Center, 4340 East Cotton Center Blvd., Phoenix, AZ .
Professional Geologist and Hydrogeologist Derek Blazer will speak at this year’s event on Coupled Model Calibration Using PEST and Multiple Observation Groups. Two numerical models are used to simulate the groundwater system at the Phoenix-Goodyear Airport – North Superfund Site (PGA-North). The Site-Wide Model (SWM) is a sub-regional groundwater flow model that encompasses much of the West Salt River Valley Sub-basin of the Phoenix Active Management Area. The second is a local scale model with a more refined grid and is used to better represent local conditions at the PGA-North site.
As a senior groundwater modeler, Blazer develops numerical models in support of mining, industrial, and water resources projects. He employs groundwater models to assist in hydrogeologic analyses for internal decision making, regulatory permitting and cost feasibility evaluations.
He has extensive experience utilizing tools such as GIS and PEST to aid in groundwater model development. With more than two decades of project knowledge honed in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Chile, Peru, and Colombia, Blazer has co-written and collaborated on an expansive array of papers.
Blazer holds a B.S. in Geology from Virginia Tech, and a M.S. in Hydrology from the University of Arizona. He is a registered professional geologist in California and Texas.
