Lawmakers in Trenton have proposed a constitutional amendment that would drastically alter how New Jersey draws its Legislative districts. Currently, legislative districts are decided by a Commission made up of individuals appointed by both Republican and Democrat State Party Chairs every ten years following the census.
The proposed amendment to the Constitution would give legislative leaders more power in redrawing the maps in 2021 and utilize statewide election results to determine new district boundaries. If this amendment receives approval by the both houses of the Legislature, the voters would have the opportunity to decide its fate in 2019.
SCR-152 would have a dramatic effect on our State and would determine future school funding, taxes on residents and businesses, as well as shape New Jersey’s competitiveness for years. CIANJ has opposed this amendment in Committee and we encourage you to contact your Legislators and urge them to oppose this dangerous amendment.
