The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (MDL) Commanders recently selected Raul Mercado, director NJIT Procurement Technical Assistance Center, to participate in its Honorary Commanders program. Mercado was formally inducted into the program at the Joint Base Honorary Commanders’ Induction Ceremony on September 27, 2018.
The Honorary Commanders Program facilitates communication between the MDL and surrounding communities by showcasing joint base capabilities, future leaders, and the caliber of men and women serving at the base. Honorary Commanders are selected based on their record of service to the local community and tradition of excellence in their profession.
“I see this relationship as an opportunity to share the work of NJIT in increasing the value small business brings to the MDL joint base and, in turn, enhancing the impact the joint base has on the New Jersey economy in terms of job creation and state revenue. By connecting the dots between New Jersey’s small businesses, the Department of Defense and the procurement office of the MDL, we are creating an ecosystem that benefits each constituent,” said Mercado
As an Honorary Commander, Mercado is teamed with the MDL procurement commander for a renewable one-year term and given base access throughout his tenure. Additionally, he will have an opportunity to participate in unique military operations and witness time-honored traditions typically reserved for those in military uniform.
The Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the nation’s only tri-service joint base. Spanning 42,000 contiguous acres, it is home to active-duty, Reserve, and National Guard service members from the U.S. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, and the Coast Guard. The base is the largest employer in New Jersey after the state government, employing more than 65,000 people driving more than a $6.9 billion economic impact to the region.
