From CIANJ’s Government Affairs team, here’s an update on pending legislation in Trenton that impacts New Jersey businesses:
Corporate Business Tax & Combined Reporting Amendments
This bill amends the way the corporate business tax is calculated and reported. CIANJ would like feedback on how these changes impact companies subject to the tax. CIANJ opposed the bill but it passed both houses yesterday.
Sales Tax on Internet-Based Businesses
This bill would provide for the collection of sales tax from certain remote sellers.
Ban Plastic Bags, Straws & Polystyrene
This bill would prohibit stores and food service businesses from giving plastic bags to their customers and would prohibit any food service business from providing a Styrofoam food service product or single-use plastic straws. CIANJ opposed the bill but it was passed out of committee.
Aviation Fuel Tax
This bill would subject all aviation fuel sales to the full four cents per gallon tax rate. It also allows for airport capital projects to be funded with this tax revenue in addition to the PATH rail service extension project. CIANJ opposed the bill.
Prohibits Excessive Charges for Drugs Developed by Publicly Funded Research
Under the bill, if a drug approved by the FDA was developed, partially or entirely, through research and development that is directly or indirectly supported by the federal or State government, it would be unlawful for anyone to sell, offer to sell, or advertise for sale the drug at a unit price that is greater than a benchmark unit price.
