HackensackUMC Fitness & Wellness Powered by the Giants launches Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Program in partnership with Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center Neuroscience Institute. The personalized, evidenced-based exercise program is designed to help people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) learn to manage their health and increase physical activity in a safe and motivating environment.
The MS Wellness Program includes bi-weekly exercise sessions in a small group training format and mini-health education sessions on topics such as nutrition, emotional health, cognitive function, relaxation skills, and self-care. The movement component of the MS Wellness Program addresses the unique needs of people living with MS and includes exercises which promote strength, aerobic fitness, balance, walking speed and core conditioning. Each exercise session will be supervised by certified, exercise professionals who are knowledgeable about the exercise modifications related to the MS disease process. All education sessions will be led by a Ph.D. level, health psychologist.
“Living successfully and maximizing one’s potential is a realistic goal for persons with MS,” says Florian P. Thomas, M.D., M.A., Ph.D., M.S., chair of the Neuroscience Institute and Department of Neurology and director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Hereditary Neuropathy Centers at Hackensack University Medical Center, as well as founding chair and professor, Department of Neurology, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University. “My goal for my patients is that they can dance at their grandchild’s wedding. That requires that the person with MS has a good understanding of the condition and its treatment options, knows how to seek help and engages in optimal health behavior so as to avoid other medical problems.”
