Cover Requirements

Cover Art: Cover art MUST be prepared by a professional advertising or graphic art firm. All cover art must be proportionate to an 8-1/2″ x 11″ VERTICAL layout. Allow a 3-inch area above subject for magazine header. Acceptable cover art: 4″ x 5″ transparency, 8″ x 10″ color photograph or 8-1/2″ x 11″ camera-ready art (include 1/8″ on all sides that bleed). Digital cover art: All graphics and cover copy must be saved in a current version of Adobe Illustrator or Quark Express. Digital photographs/artwork must be set up as jpegs, eps or tiffs with a minimum dpi of 300 and submitted on zip disk or CD. Self-extracting compression files are acceptable. Additional charges will be added: for the conversion of any submitted negatives or slides, for additional separations, or for the scanning of any graphics.

Cover Type: Cover type must not be inserted any closer than 1.5” from the COMMERCE banner. No more than 25 words are allowed on the cover. COMMERCE reserves the right to place unrelated copy on the cover, e.g., highlighting other, non-competing articles in the issue. No captions can be printed on the cover. All cover type must be approved by the editor and must fit the printer’s specifications that allow for a mailing label and the technical requirements of creating a consistent “look” for the magazine.

Story Text and Photographs: Story text (submitted on zip disk or CD, preferably in Word); hard copy of story; and 6-8 professional-quality photographs. Stories must be at least 1,500 and not more than 2,500 words, including appropriate sidebars. Text Type Style: Caslon. Headlines/Captions: Tradegothic. Pt. Size: 10pt/12.7 leading. Margins (One-inch from the top; .65 from the bottom; one inch from the outside; .75 inside.)

COMMERCE reserves the right to edit articles as deemed appropriate by the editor and publisher. Editorial Guidelines: All cover articles must contain information that is true and accurate. Articles cannot make comparisons between the company being profiled and competitors that are mentioned by name. Comparison with industry statistics is appropriate. The editor reserves the right to require documentation to determine the appropriate use of terms such as “the best,” “ the only…,” “the number one….” Endnotes should be provided to support these claims to ensure accuracy. Articles should be written and developed specifically for COMMERCE, and may not be reprints of annual reports, brochures or other existing media. If a professional writer is needed to create an original piece, CIANJ can provide a list of freelance writers upon request. Each page of the cover story is considered an editorial page and cannot be written or designed to read like an advertisement.
